SOMETHING SOMEONE ONCE SAID
“Listen, I wish I could tell you it gets better. But it doesn’t get better. You get better.” -Joan Rivers
Fittingly, the final three months of 2019 closed out in favor of the bulls with global equities rising by 9%. A variety of factors played a role in boosting stocks and bonds in the final quarter. First, manufacturing in both the US and the eurozone perked up from September, even though they both remain relatively anemic overall. Secondly, the service sectors domestically and in Europe have shown signs of life despite some headline-making layoffs in other industries. In the US, over 200,000 jobs were added in November and the fact that overall employment is standing up to weakness in manufacturing is inspiring some investor confidence that a recession is not lurking in the weeds.
On December 15th, global markets dodged a political clusterf$*k when the phase one trade deal prevented a US tariff hike on Chinese imports. No one knows how long this trade armistice will last, but it will certainly be something to monitor as we segue into 2020. With the curtain closing on 2019, we also saw some personnel shuffling at key central banks as Christine Lagarde snagged the mic from Mario Draghi at the ECB and Andrew Bailey became king of the north at the Bank of England.
